Kinesiology
Kinesiology is about how our bodies move and work.
What is a Registered Kinesiologist?
Kinesiologists apply science to understand how muscles, bones, and nerves all work together. Their knowledge helps them to rehabilitate injuries, and to help people get better at sports and other activities. They combine fitness, wellness, and healthcare into a single program. Kinesiologists work with people of all ages and abilities to help them feel good and live well. In Ontario, a registered kinesiologist is a regulated and protected title.
Kinesiologists help with:
Making sure people stay healthy
Helping people recover from stubborn injuries
Managing diseases such as diabetes or arthritis
Making workplaces safe and comfortable
Helping with fitness and sports
Speeding up return to work
Maintaining physical fitness and health
To make sure your body is strong and works well, our kinesiologists check how your joints move. They look for any movement or postural compensations that might make other parts of your body work too hard or cause pain. They also watch how you move to see if you can control your body well in challenging situations.
With all this information, our kinesiologists make a plan just for you. It has safe exercises that will help you get stronger. Their goal is to help you reach your full potential quickly and safely.

Generally speaking, all kinesiologists can be personal trainers but not all personal trainers can be kinesiologists. At Rehab Hero, our certified experts do both. Personal trainers and kinesiologists both assess your needs, make a plan, and guide you through exercises tailored to you. However, the big difference comes if you have a complicated injury or health issue. If you need someone with a scientific background or specialized training in athletic therapy, understanding the difference between kinesiologists and personal trainers is crucial.
Education:
Personal trainers may have a certification that can take a few weeks or months to earn. They learn about fitness theory, weight training, and sometimes specific rehab techniques.
Kinesiologists, on the other hand, have a four-year bachelor’s degree in kinesiology or human kinetics. They study anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics in depth. They also continue their education with workshops and courses like Functional Movement Screen and Fascial Stretch Therapy.
Scope of Practice:
Personal trainers focus on screening clients and designing exercise programs tailored to their needs. Their scope is mainly limited to fitness coaching and basic nutrition advice.
Kinesiologists have a broader scope. They can work in athletic therapy, assess posture, prescribe exercises for injuries, and provide ergonomic assessments. They are trained to work with diverse populations, including those with complex health conditions.
Work Settings:
Personal trainers are often found in gyms, fitness studios, or offering workshops.
Kinesiologists work not only in gyms and sports facilities but also in hospitals, clinics, and academic settings. They collaborate with physiotherapists, doctors, and counselors to help clients with injuries and health conditions.
In summary, while personal trainers focus on fitness and basic nutrition, kinesiologists have a deeper understanding of human movement and health. They are well-equipped to handle complex cases and work in diverse healthcare and academic environments.
The main differences between a Rehab Hero Kinesiologist and a Personal Trainer in Markham are rules, responsibility, knowing how to manage injuries, and often having a four-year university degree.
All Kinesiologists are registered under the same government healthcare rules as physiotherapists and other medical pros. They have to act very professionally, more than what's needed for a personal trainer.
Rehab Hero Kinesiologists can also help with personal training that's called Performance Therapy. These services can help with losing fat and gaining muscles.
