What Is a Physio Treatment?

By definition a physiotherapy is an umbrella term used to include many different modalities including exercise, rehab/prehab, deep tissue massage, acupuncture, sports massage, and joint mobilization. Each and every physio treatment will be different as it will depend on how you feel and how you move. This treatment will follow a movement assessment and it will be individualized to you.

Soft Tissue Mobilization

Soft Tissue Mobilization refers to the type of manual therapy that involves massaging tense muscles. At the Rehab Hero Clinic all therapists are trained to perform Soft Tissue Mobilization in the form of Sports Massage, Deep Tissue Massage or Myofascial Release Therapy.

With this type of therapy it is not uncommon to feel some soreness in the first two days following treatment. This soreness is typically similar to the same type of soreness experienced after your first workout. This occurs as the muscles start to recover from the controlled microtrauma created from the massage.

The goal of this type of treatment is to reduce pain, restore joint function, and to reduce muscular tension. Soft Tissue Mobilization can be used for both acute and chronic conditions.

Joint Mobilization

Joint Mobilization is the therapeutic modality that aims to restore joint motion and joint function. Your therapist will contact your joint directly and gently oscillate it in the direction of range that it is restricted in. This can be used for any joint in the body including your hands, feet, hips, shoulders, and spine. Joint Mobilization is often also used for joint related pain issues including rib joint irritation or hypomobility. Occasionally you may hear a soft pop or crack noise which is a normal occurrence when gas from joint fluid is released. Mobilization also helps to circulate joint fluid to promote the delivery of nutrients to the cartilage of your joint.

“Rehab” Rehabilitation

Rehab or Rehabilitation refers to exercises that are recovery in nature. These types of exercises are prescribed based off of your diagnosis and movement assessment. Depending on your current issue, these types of exercises may focus on proprioception, motor control and motor patterning, tissue tolerance and strengthening, muscular endurance, joint stability, or muscular lengthening. By doing so, the exercises prescribed will aim to restore joint function, reduce pain, reduce muscular tension, and return you and your body to it’s pre-injury state.

Rehab is the current gold standard for long term results. At the Rehab Hero clinic, rehab is used in conjunction with manual therapies such as joint mobilization and soft tissue therapy.

“Prehab” Prehabilitation

Prehab is the prescription of exercises to prevent injury or to prepare you for surgical intervention. Exercises prescribed will be based off of a comprehensive movement assessment that takes a look at deficits in range of motion, mobility, flexibility, strength, endurance or joint stability. You do not necessarily need to be in pain to be prescribed these exercises as they are preventative in nature. Prehab is best used to prepare your body for your active lifestyle. Prehabilitation can be done by everyone of all ages. Whether you are a teenager that is looking to perform well in sports or a senior looking to maintain their mobility, prehab can help.

Acupuncture / Electro Acupuncture

Acupuncture is offered here at Rehab Hero in the form of Medical Acupuncture, and with or without intramuscular stimulation (IMS) or electro-acupuncture. The benefits of acupuncture include pain relief through an analgesic effect, improved healing times through the release of growth hormone, and improved local circulation. It is used for improving healing and is used for the restoration of healing nerve and muscle function.

Performance Therapy

Performance Therapy refers to therapy that aims to get your body performing at its best. With this type of therapy you will work 1-on-1 with our Physios that are also Personal Trainers. Here you will learn how to safely lift weights, how to warm up, and how to cool down your training sessions. With this type of therapy you can expect to receive a training program that keeps your fitness goals a priority.

It is for those who are just getting into an active lifestyle. We know that learning how to exercise can be overwhelming and our physios are here to help you start on the right path.

It is also for those who are looking to optimize their movement to break through plateaus. At Rehab Hero you will get the expert knowledge of physiotherapist combined with the fitness programming of a Personal Trainer.
